Sri Lanka announced a 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against India on Tuesday, July 30. The three-match ODI series is set to begin from Friday, August 2 at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Charith Asalanka will continue to lead the side as Sri Lanka aim to make a comeback in the ODIs after losing the T20I series.
Opening batter Nishan Madushka has earned his maiden ODI call up after his impressive performances in Tests where he averages 42 from eight matches so far. However, the 24-year-old is likely to remain as backup opener with Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis set to be the first choice openers.
Apart from them, Matheehsa Pathirana marks his return to ODIs after missing the last series against Bangladesh. Nuwan Thushara and Dushmantha Chameera, who missed out the T20I series against India, have been also added to the team. Seamer Asitha Fernando has also reaped the rewards for his brilliant show in the recent Lanka Premier League with his selection.
The series also holds vital importance for India as it will feature three of the six ODIs as they’re set to play in the lead up to
the Champions Trophy 2025. Senior pros Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will also feature in the series which will mark their first appearance in ODIs since the World Cup final in 2023 where they faced a heartbreaking loss against Australia.
The series will also mark the return of Shreyas Iyer in the Indian team ever since the batter lost his central contract. Apart from him, Riyan Parag has earned his maiden ODI call up while Shivam Dube has made a comeback to ODIs after five years.
