Sri Lanka crashed out of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 after Australia registered a thrilling four-run win over Afghanistan in their final Super 12 match in Adelaide on Friday. Australia jumped to seven points after winning their final Super 12 match.
Australia needed to win by a big margin in order to stay in a safe position in the semi-final race. This win has given them valuable two points but it hasn't improved their NRR much. Their NRR now is -0.173, lower than England's +0.547.
If England win against Sri Lanka tomorrow, they are through. If England lose, Australia will go through. If it rains out and there's no result, then Australia will go to the semis.
Australia face a wait to see if they will be staying in the tournament despite a nervy win over Afghanistan.
Glenn Maxwell scored an unbeaten half-century and spinner Adam Zampa took a crucial 2-22 as defending champions Australia later joined New Zealand on seven points after a win by just four runs over the Afghans at the same venue.
It was not, however, enough to raise their net run rate above that of England, who now need only to beat Sri Lanka in their final Super 12 match in Sydney on Saturday to take the other semi-final berth from the group.
Earlier in the day, New Zealand became the first team to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals, after it became evident that Australia wouldn't be able to overtake their NRR. Australia had to win by 185 runs against Afghanistan to overhaul the Blackcaps' NRR but now, having only set Afghanistan a target of 169, the best the hosts can finish is on +1.877.
