Virat Kohli and KL Rahul joined forces to script a sensational victory for India in their opening match of the 2023 Cricket World Cup against Australia in Chennai on Sunday, October 8.

India chased down 200 after surviving an early scare in 41.2 overs as KL Rahul's unbeaten 97 and Virat Kohli's 85 did the job for them. India continued their trend of winning their World Cup openers - a streak that has extended from 2015.

Chasing 200, India were reduced to 2 for 3 in the second over. Ishan Kishan, who opened the innings with Rohit Sharma

in Shubman Gill's absence, fell for a golden duck on his World Cup debut. Rohit Sharma, one of the greatest batters in one-day cricket, was the next to go, also for a duck. Shreyas Iyer, also playing his first World Cup match, perished without scoring in a nightmarish start for India.

Ishan Kishan flashed at a widish delivery from Mitchell Starc that he could have left alone. The edge was gleefully accepted by Cameron Green at slip in the first over of the Indian chase. In the next over, Josh Hazlewood rocked India with the wickets of Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer.
