Shubman Gill, on Sunday, October 22, became the fastest batter to score 2000 runs in ODIs. He achieved the feat in India’s World Cup 2023 match against Tom Latham’s New Zealand at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.
Back on January 21, 2011, Hashim Amla set the record in his 40th innings in the match against India at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth. Gill raced to the milestone in only his 38th ODI innings.
The right-handed Shubman also broke Shikhar Dhawan’s record of being the fastest Indian batter to score 2000 runs. Back on November 9, 2014, Dhawan set the record in his 48th innings in the match against Sri Lanka at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
As far as Gill was concerned, he was only 14 runs short of the milestone and he got there with the utmost
ease.
In the fourth ball of the seventh over, Shubman played a cover drive off four a four off Trent Boult to get to the 2000-run mark in ODIs.
Gill is steadily finding his rhythm with the bat in the ongoing World Cup. The youngster missed India’s first two matches of the tournament due to illness. He returned in the match against Pakistan where Shaheen Shah Afridi accounted for his wicket.
Gill played his first knock of substance when India faced Najmul Hossain Shanto’s Bangladesh on October 19 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. He scored 53 runs off 55 balls with five fours and two sixes before Mehidy Hasan Miraz accounted for his wicket.
Against New Zealand, Gill scored 26 runs before fast bowler Lockie Ferguson sent him packing in the 14th over of India's run-chase.
