Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Mendis was brought to the hospital after suffering cramps following his stunning 122 against Pakistan in the ODI World Cup match here on Tuesday. "Kusal Mendis was taken to the hospital after the player suffered cramps upon returning from the field after his brilliant knock in the ongoing game vs Pakistan," the Sri Lanka Cricket board said in a statement.
The 28-year-old hit six sixes and 14 boundaries in his 77-ball century, the fastest by a Sri Lankan in World Cup history. His contribution, combined with Sadeera Samarawickrama's (108 off
89 balls) maiden ODI hundred, helped Sri Lanka record a mammoth 344 for nine in 50 overs.
Mendis, 28, batted with tremendous authority, smashing six maximums and 14 fours. He played a key role in two 100-plus partnerships with Pathum Nissanka (51) and Samarawickrama to help Sri Lanka reach 200 in the 28th over.
After Mendis was dismissed, Samarawickrama took over and paced his innings well, employing cuts and drives as Sri Lanka continued to pile on runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. He hit 11 boundaries and two sixes in his 89-ball innings.
