Indonesia's President Joko Widodo has said FIFA will not impose any sanctions on his country after over 130 people were killed in a stampede inside a packed football stadium. The incident occurred when police used tear gas inside a half-locked stadium, causing a crush at the exits.
Widodo said FIFA President Giani Infantino wrote to him regarding potential future collaborations. According to his letter, Indonesia will also remain the host of next year's Under-20 World Cup.
"Thank God Indonesian football is not sanctioned by FIFA. Furthermore, FIFA and the Indonesian government will
jointly set up a transformation team for Indonesian football, and FIFA will be based in Indonesia during the process," Widodo said in a video message.
The Indonesian President went on to say that they would collaborate with FIFA and the AFC to establish standards for safety and security procedures throughout his country.
"The Indonesian government, AFC and FIFA will collaborate to, firstly, establish safety standards for stadiums in Indonesia, and will formulate standards and protocols for security procedures carried out by the police based on international security standards," Widodo added.
