The 38th National Games concluded yesterday in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, with a grand closing ceremony that featured spectacular cultural performances, making the event truly memorable. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the chief guest of the ceremony, congratulated the Uttarakhand government for successfully hosting the games and praised them as the “Green Games.” He highlighted that Uttarakhand has set an example for the entire country by organising eco-friendly games.
The Home Minister emphasised the success of initiatives like ‘Khelo India’ and ‘Fit India, stating that these programs have strengthened the sports culture in India. He encouraged young athletes, stressing that determination and consistent effort are the keys to success. On this occasion, Mr. Shah reaffirmed India’s commitment to hosting the 2036 Olympic Games, stating that the country is fully prepared for it.
He also highlighted the significant increase in the sports budget, which has risen from 800 crore rupees in 2014 to 3,800 crore rupees now, providing a strong boost to Indian sports. The Home Minister announced that the 39th National Games will be held in
Meghalaya. He further added that the Meghalaya government has decided to expand the event beyond its borders, involving six northeastern states, which will help in promoting sports across the region.
Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya praised the successful hosting of the event, stating that Uttarakhand has now established itself as a “land of sports.” He emphasised that these National Games are a crucial step toward India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympics.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami highlighted the state government’s commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure for the games. He mentioned that permanent sports facilities have been developed, which will benefit athletes in the long run. He also noted that Uttarakhand introduced high-altitude water sports in these National Games, further promoting adventure sports. Indian Olympic Association President P.T. Usha officially announced the conclusion of the National Games. Following this, Union Home Minister Amit Shah handed over the National Games flag to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.
