India beat Canada, 4-0, in their opening group match of Men's Junior Hockey World Cup in Lucknow yesterday evening. Mandeep Singh, Harmanpreet Singh, Varun Kumar and Ajit Pandey were the goal scorers as India topped Pool-D after the first day.
Earlier in the other Pool-D game, England had defeated South Africa, 4-2. In Pool-C, New Zealand got the better of Japan 1-0, while defending champions Germany beat Spain, 2-1. Top 16 teams of the world are participating in the competition. Pakistan is not taking part.
India will play its
second group game against England tomorrow. Meanwhile, the International Hockey Federation said that the timing of last match of the tournament of every day has been advanced due to dense fog. Yesterday's last match between India and Canada started 15 minutes early from its scheduled start of 7 pm.
As per the revised scheduled, the last match of every day will now be played from 6 pm instead of earlier scheduled 7 pm and 8 pm. To achieve this, two pool matches will now be played on Tuesday which was originally the designated rest day.
