Chasing 136 for a series whitewash, India held their nerves to reach the target in 19.2 overs with five wickets in hand when MS Dhoni hit Thisara Perera for a winning runs.
The hosts overcame the loss of early wickets to overhaul the target with four balls to spare. Pacers Dushmantha Chameera and Dasun Shanaka bagged two wickets each for Sri Lanka.
