Kashmir Valley hosted the first-ever International Marathon in Srinagar today. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah flagged off the marathon from Polo View in the city. Over 1700 runners from across the country and 12 foreign nations participated in the 42 km full marathon and 21 km half marathon. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha felicitated the winners of the marathon.

Speaking on the occasion, the Lieutenant Governor congratulated all the winners and participants. He lauded the efforts of the Tourism Department, Jammu and Kashmir Police, Security Forces, Youth Services and Sports Department, and all other stakeholders for the massive success of the event. He said the successful mega event has put the Union Territory on the map of the world marathon.

Terming the occasion as another historic moment for Jammu and Kashmir, Mr. Sinha expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the absolute transformation of the Union



Territory, which has made hosting such international events possible.

Mr. Sinha said the record tourists’ arrival in the last few years stands as a testimony to the peace, progress, and prosperity in the region.
The Lieutenant Governor announced that very soon the Jammu Marathon will also be organised on a similar scale as the Kashmir Marathon. He said with its ideal climate, rich cultural heritage, warm hospitality, and scenic beauty, Jammu and Kashmir is emerging as a preferred destination for international sporting events.

Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty also participated in the marathon. Speaking on the occasion, the actor said that he felt blessed to have gotten the opportunity to be a part of this historic day. He expressed confidence that with the kind of hospitality and scenic beauty, the Union Territory will become the number one spot for international events like marathons.
