After the Paris Olympics heartbreak, several top India badminton players have pulled out of the upcoming Japan Open. The strong Indian contingent which included multiple medal hopefuls in Lakshya Sen, Satwaiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty and PV Sindhu. However, the players were not able to bring home a medal.
The Japan Open 2024, which begins Tuesday 20 August, has seen a number of high-profile withdrawals, such as Olympic champions Zheng Si Wei/Huang Ya Qiong. Big names who have withdrawn include
HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen, two-time champion Carolina Marin, Olympic champion An Se Young, Pusarla V Sindhu, Chirag Shetty/Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Feng Yan Zhe/Huang Dong Ping, apart from the now-retired He Bing Jiao.
Despite the withdrawals, the field in all categories has plenty of depth. Shi Yu Qi, Jonatan Christie, Anders Antonsen, Kodai Naraoka and Kunlavut Vitidsarn in men’s singles, and Akane Yamaguchi, Wang Zhi Yi and Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in women’s singles are expected to be in action.
