Mary Kom stormed into the final of the Women's World Championships. In New Delhi yesterday, the 35 year old Indian pugilist beat North Korea's Kim Hyang Mi 5-0 in the 48 kilogram semifinal.
However, in 69 kilogram category, 21 year old Lovlina Borgohain lost to Chen Nien-chin of Chinese Taipei in the other semifinal.
By reaching final, Mary Kom has already become the most successful woman pugilist in the event's history. She entered the event with a remarkable tally of five gold medals and a silver to her credit. She last won a world championship medal in 2010 -- a 48 kilogram category
gold.
Before this World Championship, the Manipuri was tied with Irish legend Katie Taylor - five gold and a bronze - in the number of medals won.
In the final on Saturday, Mary Kom will face Ukrain's Hanna Okhota whom the Indian had beaten in a tournament in Poland this year. If the dimunitive Manipuri, wins a gold she will match Cuban men's legend Felix Savon as the joint most successful pugilist in the World Championships history.
The other two - Sonia Chahal and Simranjit Kaur - will play their last-4 bouts on Friday.
