Kolkata: 131st edition of Durand football Cup, Asia’s oldest tournament, kicked off yesterday evening. In the opening match, Mohammedan SC beat defending champions Goa FC by 3-1 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Kolkata. Goa FC scored first goal but Mohammedan Sporting came heavily in the later half and scored three goals. With this win, Mohammedan Sporting clinched the all-important points and lead their Group A table.
For the first time in the
tournament’s history, 11 Indian Super League,ISL teams will be among 20 others, who are playing. The tournament also features five I-League clubs and the rest four from the Armed forces.
This year's tournament is jointly being hosted by West Bengal, Assam and Manipur, changing its single-location format to a multi-city format for the first time. The Durand Cup, which started in 1888, is the oldest football tournament in Asia.
