Wellington: The Philippines stunned hosts New Zealand 1-0 in a group A match at Wellington on Tuesday, to earn their first-ever victory in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
 
The 24th-minute goal by California-born Sarina Bolden was the country’s first-ever goal in the competition's history.
 
After becoming the first of the debutant teams to register a win at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, the Philippines, now has an opportunity to make yet further history by reaching the knockout phases with one group game remaining.
 
The second game of the day between Switzerland and Norway ended in a goalless draw



in another Group A fixture at Hamilton in New Zealand.
 
In their final group games on Sunday, Switzerland faces New Zealand while Norway plays the Philippines, knowing it needs a victory to have any chance of making it through to the next stage.
 
Earlier in the morning, Colombia got its World Cup campaign off to the perfect start, beating South Korea 2-Nil in a Group H encounter at Sydney in Australia.
 
A first-half penalty from Catalina Usme got the ball rolling for the South American side before 18-year-old Linda Caicedo doubled the lead.
