World number five PV Sindhu will play in the semi-finals of the India Open Super Series tournament in New Delhi today. The Rio Olympics Silver medalist, who is seeded third in the competition, will take on second placed Sung Ji-hyun of South Korea. Both players have met 10 times in the past, with Sindhu winning 6 of those games.
In the other semi-final, world number one Carolina Marin of Spain will
clash with Akane Yamaguchi of Japan. Sindhu had advanced to the semi-finals yesterday after beating Saina Nehwal, 21-16, 22-20.
This was the second time that the Indian heavyweights Sindhu and Saina clashed at the international level. When they met during the final of the 2014 Syed Modi Grand Prix in Lucknow, it was London 2012 bronze winner Saina who prevailed in straight games.
