Melbourne: Defending champion Rafael Nadal beat Jack Draper 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 on Monday to reach the second round of the Australian Open. Nadal, bidding for a record-extending 23rd Grand Slam title, will next face Mackenzie McDonald for a place in the third round.
World number one Iga Swiatek made a
winning start at the tournament as she beat German Jule Niemeier in straight sets 6-4, 7-5. She will play Colombian Camila Osorio in round two.
There were also victories for third seed Jessica Pegula, sixth seed Maria Sakkari and seventh seed Coco Gauff.
