Hyderabad: The Principal Commissioner of Service Tax has issued a summons to tennis player Sania Mirza asking her to appear in person or by authorised agent on February 16 at 10:30 am at the ST office  in Red Hills in connection with an enquiry over non- payment/evasion of service tax.

The summons was issued under Section 14 of the Central Excise Act 1944



made applicable to service tax matters under Section 83 of the Finance Act.

If Ms. Mirza failed to comply with the summons or intentionally avoided and did not attend or give evidence or produce the documents without lawful excuse, she will be liable to be punished under provisions of Section 174 and 175 of Indian Penal Code, according to the summons.
