In shooting, world number two Saurabh Chaudhary opened India’s account at the ISSF World Cup at Osijek, Croatia with a bronze in the men’s 10 meter air pistol event yesterday. Saurabh scored 220 in the eight-man finals after qualifying with a score of 581. Iran’s Javad Foroughi claimed gold, his second in successive ISSF World Cups, while the seasoned three-time Olympian Damir Mikec of Serbia won silver, finishing with scores of 243.0 and 241.7 respectively.
Compatriot world number one Abhishek Verma finished fifth in the same event with a score of 179.3 after also shooting
581 in the qualifying. A total of five Indians made finals on the day, but Saurabh’s was the only medal.
In the Women’s 10 meter Air Pistol event, Manu Bhaker finished seventh with a score of 137.3 in the final, while Elavenil Valarivan, along with two others, failed to make the finals of the women’s 10m air rifle competition.
Antoaneta Kostadinova of Bulgaria won the gold in women’s 10m air pistol with a score of 240. A total of 520 shooting athletes from 47 countries assembled in Osijek for the event.
