In chess, the second edition of the Chennai Grandmasters tournament will begin today at the Anna Centenary Library. The tournament will be played in classical chess format. The competition will have seven rounds, with an average rating of 2729.

World No. 3 Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi, along with Vidit Gujrathi, R Vaishali, and Harika Dronavalli, will represent India in the tournament. This year, the tournament has added a Challengers

section. The winner in this section will qualify for the Masters section for next year’s tournament.

Last year, D. Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi were tied for the top spot but Gukesh triumphed due to better tiebreaks record. The win earned Gukesh valuable FIDE circuit points, securing his place in the FIDE Candidates Tournament, where he ultimately claimed the championship title.
