15-year old Indian shooter Shardul Vihan yesterday bagged a Silver medal in the Men's Double Trap event at the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia. In the Finals, Shardul came close to winning the Gold and finished second with a score of 73 points to give India its 8th medal in Shooting.
The pair of Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan stormed into the Men's Doubles Final assuring India of a Silver medal in Tennis. In the semi-finals, the duo came back from a set behind to beat the Japanese team of Sho Shimabukuro and Kaito Uesugi. In Women's Singles, Ankita Raina had to settle for a Bronze after she lost to China's Zhang Shuai, 4-6, 6-7.
Another medal was assured for India as Prajnesh Gunneswaran defeated Kwon Soonwoo of Korea 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 to enter semis in the men's singles event. Rohan Bopanna and Ankita Raina bow out in mixed doubles quarterfinals, losing to their Indonesian opponents 4-6, 6-1, 6-10.
India now has 18 medals in its kitty - 4 Gold, 4 Silver and 10 Bronze.
In Badminton, third seed PV Sindhu averted a major scare in the Singles opening round yesterday as she just edged past world number 52 Vu Thi Trang of Vietnam, 21-10, 12-21, 23-21 to enter the Round-of-16. Saina Nehwal and the Indian pairs in Men's and Women's Doubles also progressed. In mixed doubles, Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Sikki Reddy lost to their Thai opponents 15-21, 21-23 to bow out in the Round-of-32
match.
In Archery, India's campaign ended in Individual Recurve events. Atanu Das bowed out in the quarterfinals, after former world number one Deepika Kumari made a shock exit in the pre-quarterfinals.
In Weightlifting, Sathish Sivalingam and Ajay Singh in Men's 77 kg category failed to win a medal as they finished outside the podium.
In Swimming, India's Srihari Nataraj finished 6th in the Men's 200 metres Backstroke Final. Virdhawal Khade finished 8th (last) in Men's 50 metre Butterfly Finals.
In Kabaddi, the Women team sealed a place in the Final after beating Chinese Taipei, 27-14. India's men's Kabaddi reign ends as the seven-time champions failed to reach the final for the first time, losing to Iran 17-27 in the semis and settle for bronze.
In Squash, Saurav Ghoshal and Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu reached men's singles quarterfinals. Saurav reached the quarterfinal with a 3-1 win over Pakistan's Aslam Tayyab. Harinder advanced to the quarterfinals defeating Philippines's Robert Garcia 3-1. Dipika Pallikal and Joshna Chinappa move into women's singles quarterfinals. Dipika beat Indonesia's Yeni Rohmah 3-0 while Joshna scored an upset victory over Jemyca Aribado of the Philippines with the same score.
India is currently 10th in the medals tally. China continues to be at the top, with Japan second and South Korea third.
