World number 1 and the 2024 French Open champion Iga Swiatek crashed out of Wimbledon 2024 after her heavy loss to Yulia Putintseva in their third-round clash on July 6. Swiatek started the match with her usual composure and bagged the first set, but Putintseva made a strong comeback into the game and ultimately bagged the match by 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Although Swiatek showed some strong grit in the final set but, Putintseva's athleticism and body-focused serves continued to trouble the World number 1.
In what was her very first third-round appearance in Wimbledon, Putintseva carried a different aura to herself after the first-set disappointment,
and completely turned the tables later on. The 29-year-old Putintseva walked into the clash as a clear underdog, and that was very visible with the amount of crowd support Swiatek had in her favour. However, the atmosphere underwent a huge shift following her utter dominance from the very second set which she bagged by 6-1.
Swiatek started off the third set with freshly-found composure and panache, but Putintseva's confidence had already reached sky-high by that point. Putintseva made a thrilling comeback into the set and it wasn't until the very fag end that Swiatek was able to pose even a little bit of a threat to the Kazakhstan international.
