The Wimbledon Tennis Championship gets underway at the All England Club in London today. On the first day, reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz will play against Estonian tennis player Mark Lajal. India’s top men’s singles player Sumit Nagal, will make his maiden Wimbledon main draw appearance this year. Nagal is set to face Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia in the first round.
In the men’s doubles event, Indian tennis ace Rohan Bopanna will partner Matthew Ebden of Australia. Seeded second, they will take on Adrian Mannarino and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard of France. Bopanna and Ebden reached the semifinals at the Wimbledon Championships in 2023.
India’s N Sriram Balaji is also
partnering Luke Johnson of Great Britain in the men’s doubles. They will be up against reigning French Open champions Mate Pavic and Marcelo Arevalo in the opening round.
Meanwhile, Yuki Bhambri, along with Albano Olivetti of France, will square off against Alexander Bublik and Alexander Shevchenko of Kazakhstan. Andy Murray is not playing on the first day of the tournament, as he is yet to prove his fitness after an injury at Queen’s Championships last week. This year’s championship is expected to be Murray’s final Wimbledon. Wimbledon, also known as the Championship, is the oldest and the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world.
