Chennai: The World cup Squash championship will begin in Chennai from today. The game was formally inaugurated by the State Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Udhayanidhi Stalin yesterday at Express Avenue Mall.
In his inaugural address, he said that the game had returned to Chennai after a gap of 12 years and it was an opportunity for Chennaiites to witness the match in large numbers as world's best players including Joshna Chinappa, Saurabh Ghosal, Abhay Singh, Khanna, Jessica Turnbull were playing in the matches.
President Zena Woolrigdge said that it was a delight to see the world cup return to Chennai. Chris Walker the Indian Coach said that the Indian team was in good shape and is ready to take on the opponents.
On the first day, India
will play against Hongkong and China in the pool B matches. In another match Japan will play against South Africa.
In Pool A, Egypt will take on Australia and Malaysia will play Colombo. Each match will be played to the best of five games, each to seven points with a total of 11 points in general.
Even if tied at 6-6. In a tie, there will be four matches wherein the winner of the match between the top seeds of opposing teams will get two points and the contest between the second seeds will get one.
In the event of a draw, the winning team will be decided by the greater positive difference between games won and lost. India's Saurav Ghosal, Joshna Chinnappa and Abhay Singh said that they are excited to play the game in Chennai.
