World No. 1 Simona Halep’s US Open campaign lasted an hour and 15 minutes as she became the first women’s top seed in the Open era to lose in the first round of this championship.
She fell to 44th ranked Kaia Kanepi, 6-2, 6-4, in the tournament’s first match in a newly renovated Louis Armstrong
Stadium.
Only four other women have done so since tennis’s Open era began in 1968: Another Romanian, Virginia Ruzici, lost as the top seed at the 1979 Australian Open; Steffi Graf lost at Wimbledon in 1994; Martina Hingis lost at Wimbledon in 1999 and 2001; and Angelique Kerber lost in 2017 at the French Open.
