Mohali: A bag containing around ₹26 lakh in various currencies was stolen after smashing the window glass of an SUV parked in the busy parking lot near HDFC bank in Phase 7 on Friday night.
Notably, the incident happened a few metres from the office of the IGP, NRI wing.
The car belongs to Rahul, who runs a tours and travels company and has an office above the said bank.
In his complaint to the police, Rahul said his employee Anoop kept his bag in his car around 8 pm on Friday and returned.
When he reached the car 10 minutes later, he was shocked to find the glass of the left, back window broken and his bag missing.
Rahul claimed the glass was smashed using a beer bottle, adding that his bag contained around ₹18 lakh in Indian Rupees and around ₹8 lakh in foreign currencies,
besides some cheques.
He alleged that the accused seemed to be aware of his movement and struck right before he was about to leave.
Meanwhile, a police team led by Gabbar Singh, station house officer (SHO), Mataur police station, checked the CCTV cameras installed at nearby showrooms.
Another senior police officer said they had spotted the accused in a footage and he will be nabbed soon.
However, another police officer said the complainant was not sure about the exact money stolen. “He has changed his statements thrice about the quantum of money in the bag. We are still ascertaining the exact amount,” the officer said.
Police have registered a case under Sections 379 (theft) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of ₹50) of the Indian Penal Code at the Mataur police station.
