Hyderabad: The Telangana State Special Protection Force (TSSPF) along with the WWF-India will launch its campaign to clean Fox Sagar on February 7.
Fox Sagar is the second largest lake in Telangana after Hussainsagar with a history of 119 years. About 100 degree students will take part in the cleanup drive. Cleanup kits, breakfast, drinking water and medical assistance will be provided during the campaign. TSSPF adopted the lake for its integrated and sustainable development in June 2016.
The lake has a full-tank level area
extending over 482 acres. It has over 159 species of birds, both resident and migratory, apart from butterflies, snakes and fishes that also inhabit the area. The perennial water body, famous for its natural beauty, is known locally as Kolla Cheruvu.
The Nizam constructed a dam on the lake naming it Fox Sagar in 1897, as part of 31 lakes created for improving water sources for the city. A pump house was built on the bund, constructed in a typical Nizam architecture. At the time, the lake served the drinking and irrigation needs of nearby villages.
