Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao brought smiles on the faces of Anganwadi employees in the State on Monday when he not only changed their designations but also announced massive hikes in their salaries.

Anganwadi workers will henceforth be known as Anganwadi teachers, and their salaries will be hiked from the present Rs 7,000 per month to Rs 10,500 per month amounting to 50 per cent increase. This is the second hike announced for them within two years, after the Chief Minister had increased their salary in February 2015, from Rs 4,200 per month to Rs 7,000 per month. The overall increase in their salaries would thus amount to a massive 150 per cent in two years.

The Chief Minister announced this and several other benefits for the Anganwadi employees during the ‘Janahitha’ programme at Pragathi Bhavan when he not only had an interactive session but also had lunch with

them.

He said the government would stand by the Anganwadi employees who were working relentlessly for the protection of pregnant women, lactating mothers and infants. “The government has already initiated several programmes for the women in both rural and urban areas in the State, and Anganwadi teachers have a major role to play in the successful implementation of these programmes,” he said.

Similarly, those working at mini Anganwadi centres and helpers would now get salaries of Rs 6,000 per month, again a massive jump from the Rs 2,200 per month they were getting before the State formation which was increased to Rs 4,500 per month when they had their first meeting with the Chief Minister. The overall percentage of hike in salaries of helpers since the formation of the State works out to a massive 172 per cent.

The decision to hike salaries will benefit 67,411 employees working in 35,700 Anganwadi centres in the State.A
