Hyderabad: Pre-monsoon showers on Saturday gave the city a fleeting glimpse of what could be in store in the coming days.
Heavy claps of thunder, fierce lightning and a shower that caught many unawares on the streets changed the Saturday evening frame in the city, which was wilting under hot and humid conditions over the last couple of days. In fact, the temperature, which had come down last week after a couple of showers, had shot up to be recorded at 40.4 degrees Celsius on Saturday. Things, however, cooled down after the evening showers.
The showers left many areas in the dark with power supply being disrupted, while the traffic too went for a toss at most major junctions and thoroughfares in the city.
The
Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, while stating there would be no major change in the maximum temperatures on Sunday, has indicated that rain or thundershowers could occur towards evening or in the night. The situation could be the same on Monday as well.
Private weather forecast agency Skymet attributed the weather conditions to moist southwesterly winds that were strengthening formation of thunderclouds. Pre-monsoon showers are expected over the area for the next couple of days, it said. Skymet has also said that with the advancement of the monsoon into more parts of South India, the rains would pick up pace over Telangana, including Hyderabad. The arrival of the monsoon, the agency said, could be between June 5 and June 10.
