As many as 27,940 candidates have filed nomination papers for 4,479 Gram Panchayat sarpanch posts in the past three days to which polls would be held on January 21 under first phase.
About 97,690 have filed papers of 39,822 wards of GPs which also would go to the polls on the same date. The sarpanch posts have received maximum number of nominations on January 9 as 19,416 filed papers
The first phase of GP polls began on January 7. The nominations would be scrutinised on 10 and the final list of contesting
candidates would be announced on January 13.
On the other hand, the State Election Commissioner held a meeting with Director General of Police M Mahender Reddy and requested him to take measures to prevent intimidation of candidates from filing papers to make the election unanimous.
The SEC brought several incidents of intimidation of candidates to the notice of the DGP in the villages in various parts of the State to make the elections unanimous.
