In yet another case of food poisoning in government-run schools in the State, about 30 students of the Zilla Parishad High School in Maganoor mandal fell ill after consuming mid-day meals in the school in the afternoon on Wednesday.
However, the District Medical and Health Officer Dr. K Sowbhagyalaxmi claimed that only 15 students were affected by the food poisoning. She stated that except four children all the others were stable. ”
Four students, who were serious, have been shifted to Mahabubnagar Government Hospital for better treatment. Initially a girl student was slightly serious, but now she is responding to the treatment and is stable,” she said.
According to reports, the students complained of stomach ache and vomiting after consuming the mid-day meals provided at the school. The school staff and teachers noticed students vomiting and took them to the local hospital.
Some of them were given treatment and sent to their homes. About nine students were shifted to Maktal Government Hospital for better treatment. Doctors said the condition of a 8th class student was critical. It is learnt that a majority of the students have complaints of vomiting and diarrhea.
A total of 450 students are studying in the school and of them about 30 complained about food poisoning. Students were
served rice, sambar and egg as part of the midday meal at 1 pm and soon after consuming the food, a few students started complaining about their stomach ache.
The parents of the students alleged that the students fainted due to severe vomiting after consuming poor quality eggs and other food served to them. Parents claimed that for many days, poor quality meals were being served to the students in the school.
On learning about the incident, Makthal MLA Vakiti Srihari visited the students undergoing treatment at Makthal Government Hospital. He warned that strict action would be taken against persons responsible for the incident.
Family members of the students were informed only after they were admitted to the hospital, putting them in a state of panic and worry. This is the latest in a series of incidents of food poisoning at the government-run educational institutions in the State.
