In Telangana, the third phase of Haritha Haram, a massive plantation programme will begin across the state today. Chief Minister Mr K Chandra Sekhara Rao will kick start programe by planting a sampling in karimnagar town this morning.
State ministers and other public representatives will participate in the promgram in their areas on a massive scale. The government which has planted nearly 48 crore saplings under this programme so far intends to plant over 40 crore saplings during the current phase and has roped in public representatives, officials, students, NGOs for the plantation drive.
It has supplied required saplings to all districts from nearly 3000 nurseries and involved all departments in the programme.
The Chief Minister appealed to people to treat Haritha Haram as a ‘social
movement’ and become partners in plantation drive. This prestigious programme ‘Haritha haram” launched by Telangana government in 2015 aims at increasing green cover in the state from the present 24 per cent to 33 percent by 2020. Taking a cue from the earlier first and second phases of Haritha Haram which has mixed results, the government in the current phase is focusing on safeguarding the planted saplings.
For this purpose it has called for formation of Green Brigades from village to state level. These brigades comprising students, women and employees and led by Brigadiers who are senior officials or elected representatives will not only plant but protect the samplings. In addition, the government has instituted Haritha Mithra awards to enthuse institutions and public to take part in the plantation spree in a big way.
