Four persons died and two were injured when a wall collapsed in Pearl Gardens function hall in Golnaka area of Amberpet on Sunday afternoon.
The deceased were Sohail (30), Krishna (40), Vijayalakshmi (60), and Suresh (35). One of the injured, Mohd Majid, was rushed to Osmania General Hospital, where his condition is stable. The mishap occurred when the wall, which was recently built just behind the stage, fell on the outside of the hall. The Amberpet and Afzalgunj police rushed to the spot.
The Disaster Response Force teams of the GHMC also reached the spot immediately and rescued the injured from the debris. The victims were shifted to Osmania General Hospital and Yashoda Hospitals.
Sources said while one person died on the spot, three others were declared dead at hospital. Nearly 10 motorcycles and two autorickshaws that were parked along the wall were also damaged.
According to the police, as part of the hall’s renovation, the
management had recently constructed two walls behind the stage to reportedly use it as a retaining wall.
“After the work, this was the first event being held in the function hall. The wall behind the stage collapsed while the marriage was going on and fell on the outside,” said M Ramesh, Deputy Commissioner of Police, East Zone, adding that the exact reason was to be known.
Officials suspect the newly constructed wall needed more time to be dried up. But the management allowed functions to be organised, and it was being used for decorations on the background.
“A case of negligence will be booked against the hall owner and others responsible,” the DCP said.
Mayor B Rammohan announced Rs 2.50 lakh ex gratia — Rs 2 lakh from the Mayor’s account and the rest from Apathbandhu scheme — to the families of the deceased persons. Deputy Mayor Baba Fasiuddin visited the families of the victims at the hospital.
