The State government has begun efforts to ensure smooth functioning of the new gram panchayat until elections are held.Around 4,383 new gram panchayats will come into existence in the State from August 2.

The village secretaries and special officers have been directed to open joint accounts on behalf of gram panchayats immediately. “All arrangements are being made to ensure the smooth functioning of new gram panchayats. Special officers are also being appointed in all gram panchayats including those where the term of sarpanches had come to an end,” said Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister Jupally Krishna Rao, after holding a video

conference with the officials of Panchayat Raj department and also the district collectors across the State.

Speaking to media persons at the State Secretariat after the video conference on Monday, the Minister stated that for the first time after Independence, more than 4,000 gram panchayats will come into existence at the same time. “The credit goes to Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and Telangana State. The objective is to minimise troubles of people in rural Telangana and take governance closer to their homes rather than forcing them to walk several miles for getting their grievances addressed,” he said.
