4.7-magnitude earthquake hits Telangana

Suryapet/Khammam: People in several villages of Suryapet, Nalgonda and Khammam district are in the grip of panic after an earthquake hit the cities on Saturday night.

Residents of Chinthalapalem were gripped with fear because of the intensity felt. People rushed out of their houses after tremors shook the village preceded by a loud rumbling.

The epicentre was located at Patha Vellatur village in the mandal. Patha Vellatur is 80 km from the district headquarters of Suryapet and 216 km from Hyderabad. Mild tremors were felt in several other villages in Suryapet and Nalgonda districts. The tremors in these villages started at 2.36 am and lasted for about for six seconds, and went unnoticed by most of the people since they were asleep.

The earthquake measured 4.7 on the Richter Scale set up by



National Geographical Research Institute (NGRI) at Dondaphad village in Chinthalapalem mandal on January 12 after the villagers reported rumblings from the earth.

Meanwhile, a mild tremor was felt in many villages in Chintakani, Nelakondapalli, and, Kusumanchi mandals in Khammam district in the wee hours of Sunday. According to sources, the tremors were felt in Nagulavancha, Timmanenipalem, Basavapuram and Patarlapadu villages of Chintakani mandal, Kesvapuram, Rajupet, Kusumanchi, Agraharam, Nelapatla, Jeellacheruvu and other villages in Kusumanchi mandal and several villages in Nelakondapalli mandal. The tremors took place around 2.30 am and lasted for about five seconds. The residents felt furnitures like beds and tables were moving and utensils in kitchens fell from the shelves.
