The government is planning to purchase 500 electric buses, said Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao here on Friday.

The Minister said the conventional diesel buses would be removed in a phased manner and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has already pressed electric vehicles into service for its garbage collection, he said.

Addressing the ‘Mana Nagaram’, an interactive program, where the Minister interacted with the citizens and addressed their long-pending grievances at Kukatpally, Rao appealed to the citizens to be more responsible and sensitive towards civic issues.

Citing removal of blankets and

mats from storm water drain by the sanitation staff in Ameerpet recently, he called upon the citizens to use separate bins for solid and liquid waste.“I want people to actively participate in different programmes for transforming Hyderabad into a global city,” said Rao.

During the programme, the Minister visited the stalls, which demonstrated compost manufacturing from liquid waste, dog adoption and green initiative.

Transport Minister P Mahender Reddy, Malkajgiri MP Ch. Malla Reddy, Mayor Bonthu Rammohan, GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy and other officials from different departments participated in the programme.
