Hyderbad: Andhra Pradesh has at last responded to the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) water release order aimed at catering to the drinking water needs in the two Telugu States. It started release of 4523 cusecs from, the Srisailam reservoir to Nagarjunasagar on Monday. But the release is much less than the desired volume of 13000 cusecs.
AP with the Srisailam Reservoir in its operative control, remained tightfisted in letting water to Nagarjunasagar which supports the drinking water supply to Hyderabad city besides two districts – Khammam and Nalgonda in Telangana and four districts Prakasaham, Guntur, Krishna and West Godavari in AP.
The KRMB ordered release of 1.5 tmc for Telangana, 2.5 tmc for the Nagarjunasagar Right Canal and 4 tmc for the Krishna delta in view of the threat of drinking water crisis
looming large in summer.
Responding promptly to the KRMB water release order, Telangana state has sincerely released 4863 cusecs of water to the Nagarjunasagar Right Canal to meet the drinking water needs of AP districts including the Krishna delta.
The present level of NSP is only 504 ft and it may not be able to fulfill the KRMB release order for long unless adequate releases were received from the Srisailam project the only source of inflows for the project. The water left out with NSP may not even support release of four tmc even to the Krishna delta.
The releases from Srisailam shall be allowed up to 775.00 ft at the rate of about 13000 cusecs per day to NSP.The present level of Srisailam is 784.30 ft and it is still in comfort zone to make releases as per the KRMB order.
