Municipal administration minister KT Rama Rao said that the Telangana government will distribute Bathukamma sarees from October 12. He added the scheme would continue till the last sari was distributed.
“We have ordered 95 lakh Bathukamma sarees. Nearly 50 lakh saris have been sent to districts and the rest will be sent soon,” said KTR. The minister, along with officials of textiles department and municipal administration, reviewed the progress of distribution on Thursday. The officials showed KTR the 80 varieties of sarees that would be distributed.
Addressing the media, the minister said all the sarees were procured from Sircilla powerlooms and
income of weavers in Sircilla had increased from Rs 16,000 to Rs 22,000 a month. “These are not handloom but powerloom sarees,” he clarified.
KTR said the government has not compromised on the quality and spent Rs 290 on each saree. He hoped women in the state would appreciate the government’s effort.
Meanwhile, Nizamabad MP Kavitha requested Google India managing director Rajan Anandan to feature Bathukamma as a Google doodle since it is a festival of great cultural relevance. She said more than 30 million people of Telangana will celebrate Bathukamma festival between October 9 to 17.
