The renovated butterfly park situated in the Nehru Zoological Park, the first open butterfly park in India, which was first opened for visitors in 1998, has been thrown open to the public in the city.
According to a press release from the zoo authorities, the renovated park, spread over a five acre plot in the zoo, was reopened on October 6 and is home to a variety of butterfly species that change according to the seasons. The zoo said the park attracts about 36 species of butterflies and is planted with various plants that
provide nectar to the butterflies as well as leaves on which the butterflies feed during their larval stages.
Telangana is home to 155 butterfly species while India has a total of 1,500 butterfly species. Globally, there are 17,000 different species of the butterflies. Butterflies, because of their high sensitivity to climate changes and pollution levels, are considered to be important bio-indicators of the state of the environment and they also play an vital role in pollination.
