The Narendra Modi government at the Centre is diverting the attention of people from real issues like fuel hike, unemployment and farmer suicides, said student leader and former president of Jawaharlal Nehru University students’ union Kanhaiya Kumar.

Addressing an audience at Press Club, Basheerbagh, here on Tuesday, Kanhaiya said: “We don’t talk about privatisation of profits and socialisation of losses.

The Modi government has written off debts of corporate bigwigs but the poor are suffering. Vijay Mallya ran away with Rs.9,000 crore and that money could have come in handy to eliminate manual scavenging.”

He said duty of the media is to criticise the government and raise people’s issues. “But today, if any media house does so, it is facing consequences,” he said.
