The city traffic police warned motorists of action if they were found driving vehicles with irregular number plates.
At a meeting held with number-plate makers on Wednesday, Additional Commissioner of Police (traffic) Anil Kumar said the traffic police were registering cases against those persons whose vehicles have improper number plates. He said the number plates should be made in accordance with Rules 50 and 51 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989.
Anil Kumar asked the number-plate makers to verify the registration certificate of a vehicle, and
make a note of the ownership particulars and details of customers before making a number plate. He also urged them to educate the people about the provisions of the Central Motor Rules.
The Additional Commissioner of Police (traffic) also told them that the vehicle number plates should not be prepared with fancy letters, symbols or writings.
The traffic police till March this year booked 17,486 cases for irregular number plate. Last year, 71,324 cases were booked, while in 2017, 36,632 were booked.
