TRS president and Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Monday announced the candidature of Nomula Bhagath Kumar, son of late Nomula Narasimaiah, for bypoll to Nagarjuna Sagar Assembly constituency.
The by-poll, scheduled to be held on April 17, was necessitated by the untimely death of Narasimaiah on December 1, 2020. The TRS, fresh from its recent twin victories in the MLC polls, played the trump card again, by fielding Narasimaiah’s son for the by-election to Nagarjuna Sagar Assembly constituency though it was always on the cards that Chandrashekhar Rao would pitch for Bhagath Kumar.
Narasimaiah’s popular image among the constituents coupled with the TRS government’s welfare and development programmes place the ruling party in a win-win situation. The Chief Minister handed over the B form to Bhagath Kumar at Telangana Bhavan here on Monday. Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy, MP J Santosh Kumar, MLC-elect Palla Rajeshwar Reddy and others were present on the occasion.
The TRS chief also presented a cheque of Rs 28 lakh to Bhagath Kumar for the party campaign in the election. While Congress nominated veteran leader K Jana Reddy for the seat, the BJP till late in the evening on Monday had not finalised its candidate. Tuesday is the last
date for filing nominations papers.
Born in 1984, Bhagath Kumar is an engineer by profession and holds degrees in Management and Law. He is currently working as an advocate in the High Court of Telangana. He has been active in politics since 2014 and worked as an organiser for the TRS party in the general elections in Nagarjuna Sagar Assembly constituency.
Later, speaking to the media, Bhagath Kumar said from the time his father joined TRS, the Chief Minister had given him a suitable position in the party. “Chandrashekhar Rao’s welfare and development programmes ensured my father’s victory. It is sad and unfortunate that he passed away two years after the elections. I thank the Chief Minister and will be indebted to him for reposing faith in me and making me the party candidate,” he said.
Bhagath Kumar said he would make all efforts to fulfil Narasimaiah’s aspirations and promises to the people. “I am confident they will bless me,” he said, adding that there are close to 1.5 lakh people who have benefitted under various government schemes and programmes in the constituency. The TRS candidate also dismissed the claims of BJP that they were gaining ground in the constituency since 2018.
