CM Revanth Reddy to Review Power Utilities

Fri 08 Dec 2023, 10:28:26
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy will hold a review on the power supply position, and more particularly the financial situation of power utilities that are groaning under losses.

The review on Friday is expected to produce some fireworks with the Chief Minister, at Thursday’s first meeting of the new Cabinet, making it clear that energy department officials should present themselves with full details of the financial situation of the utilities – Telangana Transco, Genco, and the two power distribution companies, TSSPDCL and TSNPDCL.

The Chief Minister is also learnt to have instructed that resignation by D. Prabhakar Rao, who was the CMD of Transco and Genco, must not be accepted and instructed the energy department officials to ensure that he is present at Friday’s meeting.

Revanth Reddy directed that Rao must be present along with other heads of power utilities, whether they have submitted their resignations or not, and come prepared to explain why the sector was saddled with losses totalling more than `80,000

crore and how this situation came about.

Revanth Reddy is learnt to have made it clear in no uncertain terms at the cabinet meeting that it appears that the power sector in Telangana was deliberately pushed into the doldrums by the BRS government, and officials who helmed the sector during the past 10 years must be prepared with facts and figures to explain how this situation, and that they will be held accountable for their actions.

It may be recalled that Prabhakar Rao submitted his resignation on Monday, while the Telangana Northern Power Distribution Corporation Limited’s CMD A. Gopal Rao, resigned on Thursday.

Announcing about Friday’s review, minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu, briefing the media about the decisions taken at the first meeting of the state cabinet on Thursday, said the Congress government is committed to ensuring 24 hour power supply, and the review was to take stock of the current situation, and financial health of the state’s power utilities.
