Matches are made in heaven, but for Reshma and Nawaz it happened in a hospital. The couple had faced objections from their families for their marriage and attempted suicide under the fear that they would be separated. Reshma, 19, consumed pesticide and was admitted to a hospital in Vikarabad district.
On hearing this, her 21-year-old boyfriend Nawaz rushed to the hospital and attempted suicide by consuming the same pesticide. Three days after the incident, the family called a qazi and got the duo married at the hospital.
Two years ago, Reshma, a college dropout, fell in love with Nawaz, a resident of Kukkindha in Vikarabad district. Reshma’s elder sister is married to Nawaz’s brother. The family learnt of Reshma and Nawaz’s relationship but objected to it because of differences between the two families.
Sources said Reshma’s sister’s wedding turned turbulent and her parents, Khaja Pasha and Hafiza, did not want their second daughter to be married into the same
family.
On January 8, Reshma, a resident of Athevely, went to the fields nearby and consumed an organophosphorus poison. Locals who found her rushed her to the government hospital.
Upon hearing about her suicide attempt, Nawaz rushed to the hospital.
When the doctors asked for the poison bottle to provide the right antidote, Reshma’s family gave it to them. Nawaz snatched the bottle and consumed the pesticide and lay down next to her. Her condition turned serious and the doctors referred her to Osmania General Hospital. To save time, the families brought the duo to Crawford Mission Hospital at Vikarabad.
Dr B. Avinash of the hospital told this newspaper, “I happened to ask Reshma about her family and she narrated the story. I then called the family and counselled them. Reshma and Nawaz insisted on marriage and her condition was turning serious. The family, fearing another such attempt, agreed to their wedding.”
