A 50-year-old trader from the city was duped by cyber fraudsters allegedly to the tune of Rs 1.2 lakh by promising discounts on shopping and grocery purchases. The victim received a call from a fraudster claiming to be an executive of a popular shopping mall offering good discounts on groceries and other household items.

Police said interested in the offer, the victim clicked on the link shared by the fraudster and entered all his card details, including the card number and CVV. However, due to a technical issue, the process could not be completed. The

fraudster then called the victim again and assured him that he would provide the promised discount. As part of the process, the fraudster sent a link and instructed the victim to open it.

“When the victim opened the link, his details were captured by the fraudster through the malicious app. The fraudster obtained the credit card details and asked him to enter only his date of birth. The victim followed the instructions and submitted the required information and within minutes, funds from his credit card were siphoned off,” said a cybercrime official.
