Cyclone Remal To Bring Rains to Telangana

The southwest monsoons might set in over Andhra Pradesh around June 4, said a report from IMD Amaravati on Friday. the rain clouds enter Telangana state a few days later, in the normal course. The monsoon is expected to set in over Kerala on May 31, a day earlier than norm., due to the prevailing weather system in central Bay of Bengal. IMD-Amaravati director S. Stella said that, plus or minus four days, various models had forecast that the monsoon would set in over Kerala on May 31. If conditions favoured , it might set in over Tirupati and other parts of Rayalaseema by June 4. Last year it set in over AP on June 19.

An earlier IMD report in April had said the monsoon rain between June and September in the pensinsula would be above normal at



106 per cent of the long period average (LPA). Meanwhile, the first storm of the season — Cyclone ‘Remal,’ meaning ‘sand’ in Arabic, a name suggested by Oman — will intensify into a severe cyclonic storm and move towards Bangladesh. The landfall point will not be very far from the Sunderbans area of West Bengal.

During landfall on Sunday, strong winds of up to 135 kmph are expected, according to IMD scientist Monica Sharma. The impact of the cyclone is projected to last for about 24 hours. In Hyderabad, the IMD said the cyclone would bring rain and cooler temperatures. For Hyderabad and the state, the IMD cautioned of 40 kmph winds and heavy rainfall in several districts.
