Even as the price of petrol remain almost unchanged since June 29, diesel is getting dearer for consumers with prices already crossing Rs 80 per litre mark in the city.

After touching Rs 80 a litre on Saturday, diesel went up by 14 paise and stood at Rs 80.14 on Sunday. Not registering a sudden spike, the diesel prices have been steadily going up in small increments and inching close to the price of petrol which on Sunday was available at Rs 83.49 per litre.

The diesel prices have been on an upwardly curve since June when



restrictions on vehicular movement, imposed as part of the lockdown due to coronavirus pandemic, were lifted. In fact in the last 50 days, the price on diesel went up by Rs 12.32 a litre. If the price of diesel on June 6 was Rs 67.82, it shot up to Rs 80.14 on July 26 while the price of a litre petrol rose from Rs 73.97 to Rs 83.49 during the same period.

This is for the second time that the diesel prices have touched Rs 80 a litre mark. In October 2018, diesel had it’s prices going beyond Rs 82 a litre while the petrol too shot up to Rs 89 a litre.
