A differently-abled woman, who was sexually assaulted and allegedly set ablaze by a person behind a PHC at Maddur in Narayanpet district on Friday evening, succumbed to the burns while undergoing treatment at Government General Hospital, Mahabubnagar, on Saturday.

According to police, the 22-year-old woman was a native of Maddur mandal. Her father who migrated to Hyderabad in search of livelihood was working as daily wage worker at Rajendranagar.

A married man and father of two children J Venkataiah of Ninjamuru village came in contact with the victim.

The victim’s family members left for their native place to attend a function. When they returned home on February 14, she was



missing. Following this, her father lodged a complaint with Rajendranagar police.

On February 18, people noticed a woman screaming for help after being set ablaze behind the PHC in Maddur. They immediately informed the police and the woman was shifted to hospital where she died while undergoing treatment, said Kosgi Circle Inspector G Janardhan Goud.

The victim’s mother claimed that before succumbing to the burn injuries, the victim had informed her that Venkataiah had sexually assaulted her. When the victim demanded him to marry her, there was a heated argument between the two and Venkataiah poured petrol over her and set her ablaze, her mother claimed.
Police registered a case and investigation is on.
