Doctors at Gandhi Hospital go on strike

A junior doctor at the pediatric department at the state-run Gandhi Hospital was allegedly assaulted by the grandmother of a two-months-old who succumbed during treatment on Tuesday evening. While the baby was rushed to the hospital on Monday with breathlessness and signs of pneumonia, the child passed away at 6.30pm.

A junior doctor on duty Dr Karthik was allegedly assaulted around 8.30 in the evening following which junior doctors at Gandhi hospital boycotted elective duties. The Telangana Junior Doctors Association (TJUDA) unit at the Gandhi hospital has declared an indefinite strike from Wednesday. All elective duties will be boycotted while emergency services will continue.

“It was a case of congestive cardiac failure and was treated as per protocol with inotrops. The patient’s pulse rate was 210 and he was hyper ventilated as well as intubated. Also the risk was explained to the attenders and consent was taken. One female attender assaulted the doctor in fornt of five to six security persons, who did nothing to stop the assault,” said Dr PS Vijayender Goud, president, TJUDA.

The junior doctor who was assaulted is now admitted in the casualty department at the hospital as he suffered minor injuries. The attack comes close on the heels of an attack on duty doctors at Niloufer Hospital a fortnight back.
