The Centre is mulling to link driving licences with Aadhaar in all the States by April as part of the proposed Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill.
The move, in public interest and safety, aims to provide a planned and evolved framework for seamless development of a secure, efficient and sustainable functioning of the transport departments in the country.
Joint Transport Commissioner J Pandurang Naik said that once the Bill was approved, it would reduce the possibilities of
duplicate or fake licence. “The Bill is likely to be implemented by April and it is expected to usher in more transparency in the issue of driving licence”, he said.
According to senior transport officials, motorists involved in major traffic violations or seizure of licence procure a driving licence from another State suppressing facts and furnishing fake data. Once linked with Aadhaar, this possibility would be addressed as faking their digital identity will become tough.
