The Election Commission is all set to prepare electoral rolls in Urdu for 16 Assembly constituencies. The Chief Electoral Officer has deputed five employees to assist the GHMC to prepare the electoral rolls in Urdu.
The EC usually publishes electoral rolls in the official language of the state, and also in English in cities. In an Assembly constituency, where more than 20 per cent of the electors speak in and use a different language, and where the number of people literate in that language and script is significantly large, the commission issues directions to print the electoral rolls in that language.
There is also a scope of scripting the candidates’ names
and their party affiliations on EVMs in the minority language.
In the past, the EC had published electoral rolls in Urdu for Hyderabad district and Nizamabad constituency. This time, the EC is preparing Urdu electoral rolls for 15 constituencies of Hyderabad and Nizamabad (Urban). EC is preparing electoral rolls in Marathi for Jukkal, Bodhan (Nizamabad district) and Mudhole (Adilabad district).
The Urdu electoral roll is generated through a specially developed software by CDAC, a Central organisation. “There are several mistakes in the spelling of names and we are improving it,” an official said.
